Vocabulary of algebra grade 7

Polynomials are algebraic expressions of three main types. Monomials, binomials, and trinomials.

One termed expressions are referred to as monomials. Ex 3xy

two termed expressions are called binomials. Ex. 2x – 3
/strong> and three termed expressions are trinomials. Ex 3x-2y-4

Problem 1: for x -3y -2, state the numerical coefficients, the second term, the constant term, the degree of the polynomial .
Solution 1: 1,-3-2 are the numerical coefficients, -3y is the second term, -2 is the constant term and the degree of the polynomial is 1st degree since the degree of the highest term is 1.

Example 2: for 4xy, what type of polynomial is this, the degree of the polynomial , the numerical coefficient, what type of term is this, the variables, and the value of the polynomial for x equals2 and y equals 4.

Solution 2: monomial-one term, degree is 2, 4 is the numerical coefficient, this is a mixed term because it’s made up of two variables x and y. The value is 4(2)(4) equals 32.

Example 3: 2a -3b -4a-2b.
Simplify 3: the like terms are 2a and -4a and -3b and -2b and they can be combined so -2a-5b.
Solution 3: This is a binomial of degree 1. The variables are a and b. The numerical coefficients are -2 and 5. The constant term is 0.
